Noyon is best visited for its Gallo-Roman history, still clearly visible in the Musée du Noyonnais, and for its Gallo-Roman ramparts. City of Saint Éloi, of the coronations of Charlemagne and Hugues Capet, the diocese of Noyon became one of the most important in France during the Capetian era. The town grew and one of the first Gothic cathedrals was built (1145-1235). A leading Protestant figure, Jean Calvin was born in Noyon in 1509, giving the town an international reputation. The town was hit hard by bombing at the end of the First World War.
