A royal town (chosen by Charles the Bald, who made it his capital), then imperial (Napoleon I restored the château and Napoleon III made it his autumn residence), Compiègne was the scene of Joan of Arc's capture. From these ancient times, Compiègne has preserved a remarkable medieval section, giving the pedestrian area of the town center a real historic charm. More sadly, the town bears witness to the two world wars, with the Clairière de l'Armistice (from the First World War, located outside the town on the way to Rethondes) and the Mémorial de l'Internement et de la Déportation (internment and deportation memorial) at the Royallieu camp.
