The two communes of Chiry and Ourscamp merged in 1826. Legend has it that the origin of the name Ourscamps goes back to the time of the bishop Saint Eloi. While building an oratory in the forest of Compiègne, he was warned that a bear had eaten one of the oxen used for the work. Eloi sent for the bear and forced it to take the place of its victim Chiry-Ourscamp has a very pretty abbey, the Notre-Dame d'Ourscamp abbey, built in 1129 by Simon de Vermandois. It is surrounded by a pleasant French garden. The visit is worth the detour. See in particular the ruins of the abbey church.
