Dating back to Roman times, this Gallo-Roman city became the first Capital of Béarn and then a bishopric from the 6th century. It is only around the year 1000, that it takes the name of Lescar. A stopover on the road to Santiago de Compostela, the fortified city remained a bishopric until the Revolution. To be seen in the old village, the Notre-Dame cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque art (12th century) with, in particular, the mysterious mosaic of the "little Moorish hunter" and the tomb of the Kings of Navarre. As you wander through the city, you will also discover the 12th-century ramparts, the 14th-century prison tower and postern, as well as the 17th-century College of Canons. An Art and Culture area has been set up in the town to display a large collection of historical furniture.
