Sublimely restored, Vervins, the ancient Gallo-Roman town known as Verbinum, has miraculously escaped the destruction of the 3 great Franco-German wars. Eleven towers out of a total of twenty-two still stand as proud sentinels of its fortified past. The church of Sainte-Anne, rebuilt in the 16th century, dominates the urban landscape. Three emblematic monuments stand out from this panorama: the bell tower of Sainte-Anne church, the belfry of the town hall and the turrets of the former Château-Neuf. It was in this historic setting that the Peace of Vervins was signed in 1598 between Henri IV and Philip II of Spain.
