Tergnier's origins date back to the 17th century. Tergnier was then a hamlet. It was the Tergnier - Saint-Quentin railway line, built around 1850 and inaugurated by Napoleon III, that allowed the city to develop. Already seriously wounded during the War of 1870 and the Great War, Tergnier, which became an important centre of the Resistance in the 1940s, paid a heavy price to the German occupier during the Second World War. To see: the Museum of the Resistance and Deportation of Picardy.
