Lacarre or Lakarra, a village of just under 200 inhabitants is located in the middle of the mountains in the heart of the Basque country, 19 km south-west of Saint-Palais. It benefits from a floral and animal park where it is good to stop in the summer season. Its name means "gravel" in Basque and is mentioned in medieval archives. It has some remains that bear witness to its past: the Etxegoinea farmhouse, built in the first half of the 17th century, and its castle, built at the end of the 19th century and now privately owned. In the past, the latter belonged to Jean Isidore Harispe, who was promoted to Marshal of France in 1851 and was a senator during the Second Empire.
