The town of Hirson really appears in the 10th century under the name of Iricio. It was at this time that a fortified castle was built on an island: Ile Notre-Dame, the result of the construction of a canal linking the Oise to the Gland. This fortified castle will be the stake of multiple strategic covetousness during the following centuries until its destruction in 1650 by the Spanish troops coming from the Netherlands.Hirson was occupied by German troops throughout the First World War.It was an important railway node before the Second World War, its station joining the western and eastern networks. Three quarters of the railway infrastructure was destroyed during the Allied bombardments, but since 1932 and the establishment of direct lines, the station no longer had a strategic role.
