Settled on the banks of the nascent Ourcq river, Fère-en-Tardenois was an important Gallic, then Gallo-Roman settlement. Today known as the birthplace of Camille Claudel, sculptor and sister of Paul Claudel, the poet and playwright born in Villeneuve-sur-Fère, the town is of obvious historical interest. The remains of the old château, one of the earliest examples of "château-hotels" in France, are a must-see for lovers of fortifications and history. The "halle aux grains", built in 1550 and listed as a historic monument, was used as a military hospital during the First World War.
