In June 1918, this village witnessed three weeks of fierce fighting between the American Expeditionary Force and the German troops. In the heart of the village, the Belleau 1914-1918 Memory Museum relates the battle and offers temporary exhibitions on the theme of the First World War. Two cemeteries, American and German, are near Belleau Wood, on the edge of the D9. Belleau Wood is a real memorial for the American soldiers. Covering an area of 81 hectares, it is possible to see the remains of trenches, shell craters and other relics related to the war.
