This site was successively inhabited during the Neolithic period, as attested by the ditched enclosures delimiting a camp of more than 1.5 hectares, and then by the Romans, as shown by the remains of a Roman villa in the place known as Les Caves, in which columns and coins of the emperor Trajan were discovered. Since 1407 and until the French Revolution, most of the seigneury of Vix was under the control of the abbey of Saintes. Moreover, a magnificent 14th century seal of the Virgin and Child was discovered, bearing the effigy of Lady Aynor de Niel, a nun at the Abbey of Notre-Dame hors les murs in Saintes. Although we do not know the precise reasons for the presence of this nun on the island of Vix, we can assume that during the period of English occupation - during the Hundred Years' War - the abbess of Saintes sent her best subjects to her possessions for surveillance. In contemporary history, we note that Gaston Chaissac - a renowned painter - ended his days in this small village. The light of the place, the lands of the dried marsh, the edges of the channel of Sablon, make of Vix a very pretty place of walk. Don't miss the departmental reserve of Ile Charouin. Vix is also a land of vineyards. Since 1890 the family business Mercier, world leader in the production of vine plants and the creation of vineyards. Mercier Frères also produces quality wine.
