It is thanks to its situation on a rocky spur dominating the valleys of the Sèvre nantaise and the Crûme that Tiffauges was chosen by the Romans. This is why a fortified castle was built there in the Middle Ages. Built by Geoffroy de Thouars in the 12th century, it will become later, by his marriage with Catherine de Thouars, property of Gilles de Rais, companion in arms of Jean d'Arc. Nicknamed Bluebeard, he was executed in Nantes in 1440. His widow remarried to Jean de Vendôme who redesigned the castle. Burned in 1569, dismantled in 1626 by order of the king, it was razed during the Vendée War in 1794, leaving only the ruins. Property of the Conseil départemental de Vendée, it is used for shows, animations and demonstrations of medieval war machines. It is one of the most visited sites in the Vendée. A small medieval town with narrow streets, Tiffauges has seen prosperous industries linked to the power of water flourish over the last century, paper mills and tanneries, and more recently shoe, clothing and watchmaking factories. Take a stroll and observe the houses that still have granite frames and cornices, the rue des Moines where the monks and weavers were located, or the rue de l'Aumônerie where a leper colony and the town hall were located. It is also the case of the rue des Douves, built in the 19th century on the line of the old dry moats dug in the granite, protecting the castle.
