Former island, Sallertaine owes its name to the salt marshes that surrounded it. Its étiers were dug at the time of the Capetians. The village had its heyday at the beginning of the Middle Ages with the establishment of three religious establishments which gave impetus to a major economic activity: the extraction and trade of salt. Until the 18th century, life went on slowly, but the Revolution broke this balance. The Vendée insurrection will long be remembered. Hervé Bazin set the action of his novel The Dying Earth there. Its location in the heart of the Marais Breton Vendéen and the visit of the "île aux artisans" are worth a detour.
