This large market town was built on the site of the old forest which was cleared, which means in agricultural terms, cleared. If the current church of the 19th century does not have any particular charm, before, in the same place, there was the Romanesque church of the priory Saint-Pierre, a Romanesque church built in the 11th and 12th centuries, burned during the wars of the Vendée by the infernal columns. Of this ancient church, the granite stone entrance portal remains, but it also hides, as if jealously guarded within it, a beautiful crypt divided into three naves, with capitals decorated with scallops. The other beautiful piece of the same period, of the Essartais heritage, its 13th century castle (or rather the ruins). During the Vendée wars, the castle was burnt. This fortress was always the property of great lords: the family of Aspremont, the family of Vivonne and the family of Lespinay. Moreover, the daughter of Louis-Armand de Lespinay, one of the last lords of Les Essarts, married Viscount Bonabes de Rougé. Their descendants still own the castle. Also to be seen nearby is the granite stone wash house which was used to wash horses. Les Essarts-en-Bocage has several other sites to discover: the washhouse, the old station (19th century), a replica of the cave of Lourdes and the mill of Ansonnière. Thanks to geocaching, this modern day treasure hunt, equipped with your smartphone, whenever you want, alone, with family or friends, find the caches of four districts of Essarts en Bocage.
