6 km from the beaches, Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm is an ancient island in the Gulf of the Pictons, surrounded by land conquered from the sea over the centuries. Particularity to see: the island of La Dive. La Dive is the last island of the former gulf of Pictons, now Marais Poitevin, to be attached to the mainland. It is a historic passageway, perched 15 m above the grain fields. A plateau about 1 kilometre long and 250 metres wide. This site offers a magnificent circular view of the Bay of Aiguillon, the Ile de Ré, La Rochelle, and the interior of the Marais Poitevin. In terms of history, Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm is home to a royal abbey, built by the monks of Noirmoutier in 682. It became a Royal Abbey after the Concordat signed in 1516, and had at its head high dignitaries including Cardinal Mazarin. A real treasure of the dry marshland, it offers a unique and exceptional architecture. Another site to visit is the Deluol Museum, a famous sculptor born in Valence in 1909 but who died here in Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm in 2003. You can discover his former studio where more than 150 works are displayed, including sculptures, paintings, drawings and pastels, inspired by the beauty of the human body, which he never ceased to magnify and emphasise throughout his life as an artist. A disciple of the French school, from which Maillol in particular emerged, he carved his works directly in stone, marble or wood, and produced statuettes in glass paste
