A long, gently sloping beach (8 kilometers) of fine sand, combined with entertainment and leisure activities from April to All Saints' Day, make Saint-Jean-de-Monts one of the Vendée's most popular seaside resorts. Originally, Saint-Jean-de-Monts was a small rural village grouped around its church, separated from the sea by a wide dune belt. From 1955 onwards, the resort underwent an incredible expansion, as the economic growth of the "Trente Glorieuses" (glorious thirty years) led us to imagine a more than prosperous future. The time had come for land development. The developers, Messrs Haas and Minélian, undertook the construction of large apartment blocks, the perfect illustration of vacation access for all with a sea view. There are still a few typical houses from the sea-bathing era in the side streets, such as in the Devallon district. Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a paradise for sporting activities: horse riding, tennis, golf, cycling or rosalie, accrobranche, archery, kite flying, sand yachting, catamaran, paddle, kite surfing... A family resort with, among other things, a Kids Folies festival (during the Easter vacations), as well as numerous sporting events such as the triathlon or Caval'Océane, held every year at the end of September: a not-to-be-missed event in the equestrian world, with show jumping competitions, children's entertainment and equestrian games. You can also visit the hinterland and the Marais Breton in Vendée.
