A long beach (8 kilometers) of fine sand on a gentle slope, added to the entertainment and leisure activities from April to All Saints' Day, makes Saint-Jean-de-Monts one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Vendée. Originally, it is a small rural town grouped around its church and separated from the sea front by a wide dune. From 1955 onwards, the resort experienced an incredible expansion, as the economic growth of the "Trente Glorieuses" led to a more than prosperous future. It was time to develop the area. The promoters, Mr Haas and Minélian, undertook the construction of large apartment blocks, a perfect illustration of access to holidays for all with a view of the sea. There are still some typical houses from the era of sea bathing in the small streets, especially in the Devallon district. Saint-Jean-de-Monts is a paradise for sports activities: horse riding, tennis, golf, cycling or rowing, tree climbing, archery, kite flying, sand yachting, catamaran, paddle, kite surfing... A family resort with, among other things, a festival for children, Kids Folies (during the Easter holidays), and which also offers many sporting events such as the triathlon or Caval'Océane, every year at the end of September: a not-to-be-missed event in the equestrian world, with show jumping competitions, entertainment for children, equestrian games. Visit also the hinterland and the Marais Breton Vendéen.
