Since January 2019, Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu is part of the new commune Montaigu-Vendée. An ancient Gallo-Roman city, Durivum was at the time a flourishing city of Roman Gaul located at the crossroads of major Roman roads at the confluence of rivers of the two Maines, promoting trade. Its situation suggested a role of refuge in case of war. In the 6th century, two monasteries dependent on the abbey of Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes were founded by Saint Martin de Vertou. Two steep valleys cross the territory from east to west where the rivers Grande Maine and Petite Maine flow to meet in confluence and form the river Maines. The architectural and historical heritage of the commune is rich. Some buildings mark the territory, such as the Boisseau bridge built in the 13th century, located upstream from the confluence of the two rivers and at the entrance to the town. This bridge with its ogival arches would have been built on the site of an ancient Roman road, registered as a historical monument. The walks along the river will offer a bucolic setting. Thus, in season, starting from the old mill (La Maison de la Rivière), a site that extends over 10 hectares, enjoy a break on the river aboard a boat on the Grande Maine, freely, or during an aperitif or with a nature guide on the trail of insects, birds, plants and mammals of the river.
