Located in the eastern Vendée, on the highest hills in the department, watched over by twin windmills and a majestic feudal keep, Pouzauges is nicknamed the Pearl or Queen of the Haut Bocage. This is undoubtedly why, in addition to the Station Verte label, it became a "Petites Cités de Caractère" in 2020, joining Nieul-sur-l'Autise, Apremont, Faymoreau, Foussais-Payré, Mallièvre, Mouchamps and Vouvant! After Mouchamps, it is the second Vendée Vallée commune to receive this distinction. Old dwellings, castles and remarkable Romanesque churches bear witness to the history of this territory in the Haut Bocage. The château, its two churches and the narrow streets tell the story of its history through the centuries. Built in the 12th century and remodeled in the 14th century, the château was owned by Gilles de Rais. All that remains today is the 18-metre square, 27-metre high keep, a formidable testimony to its former military might. The château is surrounded by the verdant Bois de la Folie. The church of Notre-Dame du Vieux Pouzauges, a jewel of Romanesque art, is well worth a visit. Its 12th and 13th century murals, its alley paved with tombstones and its Romanesque openings are all well-preserved. At the edge of the chestnut coppice, a wood typical of this rugged region, flow small streams whose silver coils draw fine arabesques on the low meadows where, in places, a pond can be seen. Fleury Michon, headquartered here, is the leading company in the Vendée.
