We love this adorable commune of the Vendée bocage, located 20 km from the Puy du Fou. The heart of the village is perched on a rocky escarpment overlooking the Petit Lay river, giving it an extra charm. Mouchamps is one of the oldest towns in the Vendée and still has houses with facades from another age, Romanesque porticos, staircase streets and remnants of ramparts. Anecdote: at the crossroads of La Renardière, a large building from the end of the 14th century was the only café with a player piano. In the 1920s, the café owner murdered a young customer. This crime is made famous in the whole region by a lament sung in the fairs and markets. In the courtyard of the old castle, art craftsmen open their doors to the public in season. This picturesque district, which has retained its charm of yesteryear, is home to the workshops of a potter. This rural village was very prosperous during the Renaissance, as evidenced by the beautiful bourgeois houses from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century that you can see while strolling through the streets of Mouchamps. Georges Clemenceau's grave is located at the Colombier. Other famous people from the town include Commander Lionel Guilbaud, a brilliant aviator who disappeared at sea in June 1928, and Ernest Beaux, owner of the Château des Cèdres, perfumer and creator of Chanel No. 5.
