Montaigu, newly named Montaigu-Vendée, benefits from an ideal geographical situation: 50 minutes from the Vendée beaches, 30 minutes from Nantes, Cholet and La Roche-sur-Yon. Let's go back in history... After the barbarian invasions in the 9th century, the inhabitants of Durinum (Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu) took refuge on a more easily defensible site, a mons acutus, i.e. a sharp mountain. During the Middle Ages, the defensive fortifications of the castle of Montaigu changed from wood to stone. At the same time, the town expanded in the immediate vicinity of the castle's defenses. At the end of the 15th century, King Louis XI, fearing the Breton forces, encouraged his cousin and lord of Montaigu, Louis de Belleville, to fortify the town. In view of the strategic geographical situation, on the border of Brittany and on the royal north-south road from Saint-Malo to Saintes, King Louis XI bought the castle and the town of Montaigu in 1473, which became a royal town. On the king's orders, massive defense works were carried out: refortification of the castle walls, digging of the moat, construction of the monumental (and famous) stone dike... During the Revolution, the city was one of the centers of revolutionary ideas in a strongly royalist and Catholic region. Several Montacutains distinguished themselves at that time. The 19th century was a pivotal period for the industrial development of the town, which is now a major economic center in the Vendée. To be seen in the commune, the park of the ramparts and the park of the Rochettes, and especially the dike of Montaigu.
