The commune's name comes from Melitius and acum (the town of Melitios). The famous abbey appears many times in the history of Poitou. The original Celtic village on the island of Maillezais disappeared after Norman pillaging. The Count of Poitou, Guillaume Tête d'Etoupe, established a fortress there to prevent the Normans from sailing up the Sèvre. It was Emma, Countess of Poitou, who built the abbey, following the miracle of Maillezais. In the 16th century, Maillezais became associated with La Rochelle. Today, Maillezais is the capital of the marshlands, its history intertwined with that of its abbey.
