The town of Herbauges is the powerhouse of the bocage and has had an eventful existence over the centuries. A local legend has it that in this place called Herbauges, there was a settlement living in debauchery, which was cursed by Saint Martial, evangelizer of the region in the 4th century. This is certainly not true, but we have found under 3 or 4 meters of earth the remains of houses, many pieces of pottery, broken tiles. The country was invaded by the Romans who built many villas: the bridge of the city, the Roman bridge of Belletière... The city was burned by the Normans and destroyed in 843. It suffered a lot from the religious wars, the Hundred Years War and the Revolution. The origin of the name Ardelay, a district in the south of the city, would come from the abundance of clay around this place. 7 km from the Puy du Fou, in addition to an economic dynamism recognized by all and praised at the national level, Les Herbiers is also an attractive tourist pole. The town is home to the Abbey of La Grainetière, a 12th century Benedictine abbey founded around 1130 by the monks of Saintonge. Indissociable from the history of Les Herbiers, the Mont des Alouettes is a legendary hill which, from the top of its 231 m, offers a panoramic view of the Vendée bocage. The Château des Herbiers is a fortress of the XIVth century. It was here that Charette was appointed general-in-chief of the Catholic armies in 1794. As for the Ardelay castle, which has become an exhibition site, its fortification dates from the beginning of the 15th century.
