Site constituting a peninsula, covered by a forest of maritime pines planted in the second half of the 19th century

This site is remarkable and even more so, seen from the sky! The Pointe d'Arçay is a 1,035 hectare site, on land and at sea. Belonging to the southern part of La Faute-sur-Mer, it constitutes a peninsula of about 5 km parallel to the coast. This sandy spit, still expanding, was formed during the 18th century by the accumulation of sand deposited by the currents. The sandy point can gain several tens of meters in length each year. Only a few sites in the world have such dynamics, which makes it an exceptional site. It is largely covered by a forest of maritime pines planted in the second half of the nineteenth century, after a decree on the fixation of the dunes. Only the northern part of the forest is accessible to the public. In the south, it serves as a refuge for many migratory birds. The Pointe d'Arçay and the nature reserve of the Bay of Aiguillon form a set of habitats of international importance for migration. These two sites are linked to many other natural coastal sites of high ecological interest in the Poitevin marshes and the Charente channels. At the end of the Pointe d'Arçay, where the marshes spread out like the fingers of a hand, maritime rushes, broom reeds, sea lavender reign... The flora and fauna are rich but fragile, so please respect them. There are guided tours - about 3 hours. But it is advisable to book early at the tourist office, the number of visitors being limited.

To make absolutely if you stay in La Faute, L'Aiguillon or La Tranche on sea! A walk on the beach at low tide which takes you to the tip of Arcay where the Atlantic and Have meet. Discovered fauna and flora nature reserve. It takes a good half a day for the excursion. Attention it should check enjoyed before beginning in the adventure!
