With its 794 hectares, a territory of 5 km by 2.5 km, La Châtaigneraie ranks among the smallest communes. Around 1021 William IV, Duke of Aquitaine, entrusted the priory to the monks of Maillezais. The Chasteigner family built a fortified castle; the parish then took the name of Castaneria. Before the passage of the infernal columns, La Châtaigneraie belonged to François de la Rochefoucault, author of the Maximes. In May 1794, a decree of the Committee of Public Safety ordered the destruction of the city, saved by General Becker. To see: castle Chatenay, castle Cedars, built in 1870, the fountains and two laundries (in use).
