About ten minutes east of La Roche-sur-Yon, it owes its name of Maison du Vicomte to its founders, the Viscounts of Thouars. During the Vendée war, it was used as a slaughterhouse and butchery for the Republican army. In the heritage, the ramparts of the castle of the Viscounts of Thouars, rue des Basses-Prisons, the magnificent church of Saint-Nicolas (classified as a historical monument), a Romanesque church of the 11th century, with its crossed nave, a vast nave with five bays, the communal washhouse built in 1872, the ornithological museum Charles Payraudeau. In the old town, very typical streets and remarkable houses dating from the 15th to the 19th century.
