Chantonnay is a county town located halfway between Nantes, Niort and La Rochelle. It offers all the attractions of a medium-sized town with quality facilities and services. Prosperous in the 19th century thanks to the exploitation of lime which was used to amend the land of the whole Bocage, the small town has been reconverted in the furniture industry and the food-processing industry. This corner of the Vendée is a sportsman's paradise because it is very green and slightly hilly, not to mention the lakes: first of all, the lake of Chantonnay, the lake of Touchegray-Moulin Neuf. It stretches along the river Lay with a succession of valleys and ends at the dam of Angle Guignard. A few kilometers from here are also the lake of Vouraie in Bournezeau-Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis and the lake of Rochereau. The Rochereau lake at Sigournais is aptly named, a wide valley interspersed with grassy and rocky hillsides. This reservoir extends over 5 communes: Sigournais, Monsireigne, Bazoges-en-Pareds and Tallud-Sainte-Gemme and offers hikers many starting points for trails. You can practice fishing, nature sports (canoeing, hiking and mountain biking) and water activities offered by the base. Nature lovers are also familiar with the "coulée verte" trail, which starts at the tourist office. This path is part of the city's network of greenways and allows you to reach the Polaris area along the Mozée River. A fitness trail, picnic tables and children's games are all along it.
