The commune is named after the Roman officer who, around the 4th century, commanded the ship of Prince Lucius, son of the emperor Constantine Pogonat. Originally, it was called Brétignolles, and took the name of Brétignolles-sur-Mer on July 23, 1919. In the Middle Ages, Brétignolles was part of the barony of Brandoise, commonly called Pays de Brem, which extended from the Jaunay to the Auzance. Around 1450, the Mauclère family, an ancient knightly family, built a manor house which constitutes the historical element of the current Beaumarchais castle. King Henri IV would have stayed there. This coastline witnessed many shipwrecks and battles during the episode of the "pocket" of Saint-Nazaire, in front of the beaches of La Sauzaie and La Parée. The historical Brétignolles is part of the Brem area, limited to the south by the Gachère harbor and the marshes, and to the north by the islands of Riez and Monts. It forms, at the time, the Gulf of Olonnes. There is evidence of the existence of a port that would have armed ships for whale fishing. Brétignolles is a family resort with a rocky and steep coastline sheltering pretty creeks, beautiful beaches and a seductive dune. It is the ideal place to learn to surf, windsurf, kitesurf... The corniche of Brétignolles-sur-Mer, which stretches from La Sauzaie to the Marais Girard, offers many possibilities for walking or cycling. The commune is divided into five districts: La Parée, La Sauzaie, Les Dunes, La Normandelière and Marais Girard.
