Formerly an island in the center of Bourgneuf Bay 200 years ago, Bouin has become an "island inland" as a result of geological mutations, the arm of the sea separating it from the mainland having been reduced to a channel. Bouin owes its name to the fact that it was often submerged - "bougnée" in Vendéen dialect. Today, it is protected by dikes and polders that are unique in France. Beautiful buildings remain such as the old castle of the seneschal of Poitou, the hotel of the seneschal of Brittany, the pavilion and its square tower. The commune includes the town itself and the picturesque village of Epoids with its small port where you can taste oysters.
