7 km from La Tranche-sur-Mer, Angles is an authentic village in the South Vendée, where the omnipresent limestone makes all the charm of this peaceful village away from the summer crowds attending the attractive seaside resort of La Tranche-sur-Mer. Angles invites you to discover its treasures: the alleys of the old town, the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, a jewel of Romanesque and Gothic art and its curiosity called "the curious beast"; but also the town of Moricq and its imposing tower, a vestige of a past steeped in history, the octroi pavilion, located at the edge of the town of Grues, and whose role was to collect taxes, levied for the benefit of the municipalities on foodstuffs for local consumption. Moreover these taxes had taken the name of octroi. Indeed, at the beginning of the 11th century, multiple Norman incursions created a serious climate of insecurity in the region causing a significant depopulation. To protect itself from these invasions, one builds the tower of Moricq. It is in a context of repopulation that the city of Anglis was founded around 1075 thanks to the establishment, on the ruins of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa, of the church of Santa Maria de Anglis (Sainte-Marie-des-Anges). During your visit to this charming village, the inhabitants may tell you about the "legend of the Beast", which you can see on the roof of the church, and which says that the beast "ate the beauty of the girls of Angles"...
