Just a stone's throw from the ocean and close to Navarre, Ezpeleta (Basque for "place planted with box trees"), formerly a fortress and seigniory attached to the Kingdom of Navarre, today a Labourd village of over 2,100 inhabitants, is a charming village whose agricultural economy has been transformed by tourism in recent decades. Indeed, it has acquired a worldwide reputation for its famous red chillies ("red gold"), which dry on the facades of its houses.
