Situated 25 km from La Ferté-Bernard (and 20 km from Le Mans), the commune of Montfort-le-Gesnois (3,000 inhabitants) was founded in 1986, following the regrouping of the villages of Montfort-le-Rotrou and Pont-de-Gennes. Montfort-le-Rotrou refers to the de Rotrou family, lords of Nogent and Mortagne, viscounts of Châteaudun (956-1260) and counts of Perche (1126-1226). During the Revolution, the commune was renamed Montfort-sur-Huisne, in reference to the river that flows at its feet. The other merged commune, located at the crossing of the Huisne, Pont-de-Gênes or Pont-de-Gennes, is of Gallo-Roman origin: Vicus de Genida or "village of Genida". Montfort-le-Gesnois has a rich heritage and a railway station served by the TER Paris/Brest line.To see the Saint-Gilles church (11th century), the Notre-Dame church (19th century), the Romanesque church of Saussay, the 12th century tomb of the Crusader in the Saint-André cemetery, the 19th century castle as well as the 110 steps at the top of which one enjoys a beautiful view of the Huisne valley and the stud farm. The 2nd Sunday in May, for more than 40 years, is the festival of Old Crafts and Trades on the Roman Bridge, a picturesque setting on the water's edge, with the ruins of the mill on the Huisne and a restored wash-house.The last brochure (2019 edition) of the collection of the Discovery Trails of the Pays d'art et d'histoire du Perche Sarthois, is devoted to Monfort-le-Gesnois. A very beautiful work on the history and remarkable heritage of this territory.
