ASIA MARKET

Specialized grocery
5/5
1 review

Behind the new Leclerc Drive, or Hyperburo, the new address for exotic and Asian products in Le Mans is here. At attractive prices (lower than supermarket prices). Chillies, bean sprouts, flours, teas, cookies, drinks, rice, sauces, nori leaves and many other products are available on the shelves. But the most impressive is the frozen food section, with lots of fish, but also desserts, smoked meat, samousas and Reunion corks. The products come mainly from Asia, but also from Africa and the West Indies. The sales area is around 300m2, enough to add a touch of the exotic to your dishes so that your guests won't be able to resist, and to whom you'll be happy to pass on the address. The young owner Xin Lin is very friendly and it's not uncommon to hear Ni hao, which undeniably adds to the exoticism of this store. And if the northern zone doesn't tempt you, there's the same in the city center!

EXOTIC MARKET

Delicatessen African products
5/5
1 review

Guillaume, of Zairean origin, welcomes you with kindness and simplicity to his cosmopolitan store. Made up of two rooms, the second, at the back, houses the African grocery store. Don't be fooled by its modest size, there are plenty of products for concocting exotic dishes. It's a godsend to be able to stock up on cassava, yams, plantains, attiéké (cassava semolina) and dried fish right in the center of town. You can also stock up on rice (perfumed, long, broken once or broken twice), frozen fish and meat, peanut and cocoa spreads, African beer (Flag) and sodas, spices... In the first room, you'll find DVDs and hairdressing accessories (highlights, weaving, hair care products, relaxers, hairpieces...). Not sure what to choose? Don't worry, we'll be happy to advise you. Some people also come here with friends to chat and enjoy local video clips. Finally, for Bollywood fans, this friendly boutique has a vast selection of Indian films.

LA CAVE DE PÉDRO

Regional groceries
4.5/5
2 reviews
Closed - Open to 10h00

In 2014, Pierre Raimbault, aka Pedro, moved into the premises recently vacated by the legendary Bulle bookshop. In the heart of the Plantagenet town, the stone vaults no longer house comic books, but precious bottles of all origins. More than just a wine cellar, this address has already become a must for lovers of fine bottles. The choice is certainly not plethoric, but it's pretty darn sharp. Quality rather than quantity. Pedro knows the history of each cuvée inside out, and will guide you to the right bottle for the meal or aperitif ahead. Great wines and friends' wines, a fine selection of Loire and even Sarthe crus (Ah! Jasnières des Maisons Rouges)! Hand-picked spirits from France and around the world await the connoisseur, not far from some thirty-five different craft beers. Tasting evenings are held throughout the week, by reservation only.

LA TENTATION

Bakery

Mmm! As soon as you enter, your eye is inevitably drawn to the pastries on the right, the macaroons on the left and the cakes: entremets glacés, dome-shaped marbré blanc et rouge glacé, carré au chocolat with successive layers of sponge cake and nougatine, charlotte aux framboises... If only it stopped at pastries... Well, it doesn't. It also sells handmade chocolates and bulk chocolate (with hazelnuts too...). But it's also a bakery: we make the Gana baguette, with its soft crumb and crisp crust. Sandwiches are also prepared daily. Will you give in to temptation?

It's time to check out, but take a good look around: there's still a small delicatessen corner (mainly tinned vegetables), as well as honey and gingerbread.

MARCHÉ DE PONTLIEUE

Market

The Pontlieue market is undoubtedly the city's most popular. With over 150 traders on Sundays, it's hard to get around, let alone park. A traffic lane is often requisitioned to cope with the flood of strollers. On Wednesdays, it's a little easier to breathe, with around 30 merchants. Many are small producers (market gardeners, cheesemakers, bakers, etc.) from the rural areas around Le Mans. We tread water, but eventually make some progress... a little. The center of the market is reserved for clothing vendors, where fashions are misused to undercut prices. This lively market often ends with a drink in one of the nearby cafés. Practical: the Durand-Vaillant tramway station is at the entrance to the market.
