The name Castet comes from the presence of a castle known as the Tower of Abadia of the 12th and 13th centuries, owned by the Viscount of Oloron and then that of Ossau when the two Viscounties were brought together. Facing the church of Saint Polycarp, it was built on a hill and completed by an enclosure and a quadrangular dwelling surmounted by a fortified and crenellated platform. Partly destroyed in 1475 for bell tower quarrels, it was restored in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Below the village is the Port of Castet, (868 m), a very beautiful plateau of pastoralism, "a counterpart" to the Benou plateau facing it. The municipality is crossed by the river Ossau, which supplies the lake of Castet, now a famous leisure centre. Economically, Castet makes its living mainly from agriculture and breeding (notorious draught horse competitions) as well as from fish farming, with the Fario trout remaining the queen of the area. A charming commune close to the mountains.
