Divided between nature conservation and protection against the vagaries of the Loire, this commune is one of those that were entirely covered by the Beaufort forest, which was cleared by the monks of Saumur in the 10th century. Saint-Martin has a remarkable history. The town was the birthplace of an illustrious local family, the Aubert du Petit-Thouars. While one son, a naval captain, gave his life at the Battle of Aboukir during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in 1798, the other brought back to France his discoveries on the flora and fauna of Madagascar, where a street still bears the name of these Ligerians.
