What a strange story Saint-Barthélémy-d'Anjou has! In 1939, when the Polish president fled his country and took refuge here, he chose to live in the château de Pignerolle. The town then became the capital of Poland for several months. In 1940, he abandoned the castle to the Germans who built barracks and a sophisticated communication centre. They stayed there until 1944, when Angers was liberated. The town is rich in precious heritage since, in addition to the park of Pignerolle classified as a historical monument, the castle of Romanerie and the manor of Ranloue are both registered on this list.
