Necropolis of the Plantagenets, 18 km from Saumur and 80 km from Angers, Fontevraud evokes the epic of the great kings of Anjou and England. One thinks of Eleanor of Aquitaine and her favorite son Richard the Lionheart, of Henry II Plantagenet... The immense royal Abbey, open to the public, was at one time a monastic city run by women, at another a prison, and is now world famous. In addition, there are remarkable buildings such as the church of Saint-Michel, the fountain of Saint-Mainbœuf, the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié and the washhouse of the Roches. The village is charming. Gourmets will appreciate the Macaroon of Fontevraud, an old-fashioned macaroon made with almonds.
