The history of Bellocq is linked to that of Gaston VII of Moncade. The son of William II of Béarn and Gersende of Provence built the castle between 1250 and 1280. The city is responsible with Mongiscard for protecting the new capital of Béarn, Orthez. The Viscount of Béarn worked hard for peace in the region. A walk in the heart of Bellocq is an opportunity to discover the bastide, the first one in Béarn with some remains (isolated and rare mullioned windows today, the porte cochère which still supports some parcels of the building). The church, for its part, was an integral part of the defences of the bastide (the current windows date from 1860) with its belfry-donjon. It dates back to the end of the 13th century. You can also discover, by appointment, the castle, classified as a Historic Monument since 1997 and partially restored in 2004 after operations carried out by various voluntary associations. The reformed temple was rebuilt in 1805, surrounded by a cemetery imposed on the authorities in 1788, as soon as the Edict of Tolerance came into force. Finally, two watchtowers, of Lascadeutrouilh and Séré, remain today the only remains of the city's southern defence fort with the embankments and the spiral staircase leading to one of the two towers.
