Petit Futé's opinion on ARÈNES MUNICIPALES

Vintage plate 2020

Bayonne is the oldest bullfighting town in France. One of the very first elements found in the municipal archives date back to 1289, it is a decree of the Bayonne aldermen which regulated the running of oxen, cows and toros in the streets of the town. It is the oldest written bullfighting decree in the world, and it already mentions a tradition! Later, ephemeral arenas were created in different districts: St Esprit, Allées Marines, Allées Paulmy, before the construction in 1893 of the Plaza Marcel Dangou. The Plaza de Toros in Bayonne is in neo-Moorish style with its Mudejar inspiration. Today, it can be said that the Plaza de Toros in Bayonne is the largest in the South-West, with 10,000 seats. Historic events have marked the times, with the greatest visitors coming to Bayonne for the Taurine Festival. A tradition that continues since every summer, the Arena comes alive during 3 prestigious férias around the aficionados and peñas who enliven these periods. Every year, at noon, every bullfight morning, the drawing of lots and the separation of the toros is carried out, live on screen with commentary, under the bleachers of gate A. Various animations are proposed by the bullfighting clubs of the city and bullfighting art exhibitions are organized under the corridors of the bullring. Bullfighting artists from all walks of life, both well-known and unknown to the general public, are gathered here. Concerts or shows also take place in the arenas throughout the year.
