Guémené-Penfao has long served as a linguistic barrier beyond which Breton was no longer spoken. On the banks of the Vilaine, it has belonged to prestigious families: the Brucs, the Becdelièvre, the Montmorencies and the Condés. Châteaux, manor houses and chapels bear witness to this past. See the old houses, the 15th-century Grand-logis with its octagonal tower, the Château de Bruc rebuilt in the 15th and 19th centuries, the Château de Juzet, the Château de Bois Fleury and the Empire-style Château du Brossay. Surrounded by the Don valley, Guémené-Penfao is one of a number of remarkable sites ideal for exploring on foot, by bike or by canoe.
