Châteaubriant is the capital of the Pays de la Mée region, with its imposing medieval and Renaissance castle, testimony to the strategic vocation of this region between Anjou and Brittany. The Porte Neuve (New Gate) best evokes the town's medieval past, when its ramparts were removed in the 19th century. The main thoroughfare, rue de Couéré, features beautiful half-timbered houses such as the Maison de l'Ange, a reminder that Victor Hugo's mother lived in a nearby house. The thousand-year-old Béré fair, with its "foirail" (2nd largest market in France for lean cattle), is still going strong. Cultural life is not to be outdone, with its magnificent Théâtre de Verre.
