Wizernes is a small town of 3,434 inhabitants, located in the Aa valley south of Saint-Omer and in the Arques valley at Lumbres. These two neighboring communes are home to some of the most impressive remains of the Second World War in Europe. La Coupole d'Helfaut-Wizernes is a veritable underground city built by the Germans in 1943 to launch the famous V2 rockets over England. Two-thirds of the town was destroyed during the war by forces aiming to wipe out this blockhouse. The town rose from the ashes and was built up again after the war, and is now a pretty, flower-filled little town.
