Wimereux, an elegant seaside resort in the heart of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Regional Nature Park, was a favorite vacation spot for wealthy Parisians and people from Lille during the Belle Époque. Trains arriving from the capital poured in their stream of tourists, eager to reach their villa or one of the local hotels. Before long, the English also flocked, contributing to the success of this fashionable seaside resort. Between 1870 and 1930, more than 800 Anglo-Norman-style villas were built: this was the era of half-timbering, elaborate wooden balconies and pastel-colored facades. Visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the buildings of the Marine Station, as well as 17th and 18th century military remains such as the Battery and Fort de la Crèche, the ruins of Fort de Croy and the Legion of Honor Memorial.Sporting events such as sailing regattas and the French Kitesurfing Championship are also organized. Bordering Boulogne-sur-Mer and gateway to the Grand Site des Deux Caps, Wimereux is an attractive seaside resort all year round. Prehistory enthusiasts can visit the Pointe aux Oies site and admire the Charles Belart collections (Paleolithic tools). Those who love wide open spaces can explore the 410-hectare Natura 2000 site, evocatively named Falaises et dunes de Wimereux, estuaire de la Slack, Garennes et Communaux d'Ambleteuse-Audresselles.
