Archaeological discoveries point to the existence of settlements in Asson long before the Middle Ages. On the site of the town have been found carved flints dating from the Paleolithic. Roman tiles also prove a sedentary presence in the Gallo-Roman period. The town of today is built on the plan of the bastides typical of new towns of the Lower Middle Ages, in the 12th century. However, traces of the bastide itself are hardly visible on the ground. In the 15th century, forges are created by Jean de Molou on the territory of Asson. This one becomes a commercial crossroads, for the transhumance but also especially for the transport of iron ore. In the 21st century, transhumance is a key practice from an environmental point of view (biotope management). The commune has a castle, the Château d'Abère (or Château Luppé). The history of this one is tortuous: a secular abbey, it was owned by a Protestant officer of Jeanne d'Albret during the Wars of Religion in 1569. The latter was murdered with his family by the Catholics. The building then passed into the hands of the governor of Nay, close to the family of King Henry IV. His son sold the castle in 1662 to the de Gassion family. With the French Revolution, it was sold again, changing its name, to finally fall to the Luppé family around 1850, heir by marriage of the last buyer. Viscount Gaston de Luppé, the sculptor who fashioned in bronze two busts of "Victorious France" placed on the monument to the dead of Asson and Arles (in the Bouches-du-Rhône), gave the land of his property to the commune in 1921. Currently, his four children share the castle in joint ownership.
