Ascain is another example of a pretty, typically Labourdin and Basque village. Water and mountains are the twin attractions of this village of 4,434 inhabitants, crossed by the River Nivelle and dominated by three peaks: Bizkarzun, Esnaur and Larrun, known as La Rhune (905 m). From the Place du Fronton, you can take in the town at a glance: the delightful church sitting on its dungeon bell tower (1626), the streets lined with hotel-restaurants and the Rhune in the background. They'll tell you that Pierre Loti wrote Ramuntcho from this pediment square (at the Hôtel de la Rhune?), inspired by a pelotari from Ascain, and that Churchill painted a watercolor there.
