The town's origins lie in religion: its name comes from the Latin word monasteriolum. Its prominent position, 40 meters above the Canche valley, enabled it to play a military role. The town was made famous by Victor Hugo, who set the opening scene of Les Misérables here. A magnificent son et lumière show is held here every year.
