Museum displaying a wide range of objects and photos of life in the region during the Second World War
A standard casemate (also known as a bunker in English), the one at Marckolsheim was converted into a Memorial to commemorate the appalling fighting that took place between June 15 and 17, 1940. Open since 1972, this memorial, named after the Minister of War André Maginot - made famous for having voted the funds to start the work in 1930 - allows visitors to enter the casemate of3rd line no. 35 during the three days of battle, following which the town of Marckolsheim was more than 80% destroyed.
Set up in a casemate, it recreates the premises as they were at the time of the events, with their firing chambers, dormitories, command post and so on. Outside annexes recall other historical events: like this Russian heavy howitzer, symbolizing the "Malgré-nous", or a half-track from the 1st DFL, the Hartmannswillerkopf tank from the2nd DB, a self-propelled gun from the Leclerc division, a Bofors anti-aircraft gun and a Bailey bridge element.
Inside the bunker are various rooms, including the command post, the dormitory and the ammunition bunker. Also on display are a variety of artifacts and a photo exhibition on life in the region during the Second World War. Ask the museum about guided tours, available by appointment for groups. On-site, don't miss the store, offering books, postcards and posters related to the museum's theme.
