Liévin has an undeniable archaeological past. Numerous vestiges of the Neolithic period, then Roman and Gallo-Roman, testify to this. Until the 19th century, Liévin was a small artesian village, which lived essentially from agriculture. But in 1857, the discovery of four layers of coal transformed the economy and the landscape of the town. Liévin experienced the fever of coal mining, the joy of the discovery and enjoyed a certain prosperity through extraction.
