Fruges is a large rural village with a population of about 2,300 inhabitants and a few local shops, two bars and three restaurants. Its architectural heritage consists of about twenty houses dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The town hall building also dates from the 19th century as well as the Saint-Bertulphe church which has two giant statues made of lime wood, remains of the Sainte-Marie-au-Bois de Ruisseauville abbey. The walk along the dykes along the small river leads to a mill still equipped with its paddle wheel. Peace and quiet is certainly the essential characteristic of this small country village.
