Étaples is a small town of about 11,000 inhabitants, with a fishing port whose activity has survived invasions, fires and bombardments during the wars of the past. Napoleon Bonaparte massed part of his army there to conquer England. Important damages were caused by the two world wars. Étaples paid a heavy price, which was recognised by the award of the Croix de Guerre in 1920 and a citation in the Order of the Nation in 1945: "The courage of its population, and particularly the tenacity of its sailors, will remain an example for all those involved in the national recovery". The Military Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth forces cemetery. It is a moving place and impressive in its size. You can learn all about the life of fishermen and the fishing industry by visiting the Musée de la Marine and the Musée-Aquarium Meréis. Complete this knowledge by visiting the Museum of Traditional Shipbuilding. For nature lovers, many walks are possible in the heart of the National Nature Reserve, in the Bay of Canche, which is home to a diversity of fauna and flora with rare species. The access, well marked, is free provided that the regulations are respected. The communal forest, meanwhile, contains many marked trails for hiking. The less sporty can also take a deep breath of air in the middle of this natural area preserved by embarking on a cruise in the Bay of Canche. And fishing enthusiasts can also enjoy it!
